The annual police National Night Out is coming up next month. The event is held each year in communities all over the country to help the public get better acquainted with their law enforcement agencies. Locally, the Night Out will be in St. Joseph Township at Riverview Park on August 2. St. Joe Township Police officer Rick Knapp says, in light of recent events, it would be a good thing if there’s a strong showing from the community.

“It would be nice to see the community come out and support the local law enforcement and emergency response personnel,” Knapp told WSJM. “I think it would mean a lot to us. I know with all the terrible events that have been going on, not only in our own community but throughout the country, we need some positivity.”

On hand for the Night Out will be several local police agencies and fire departments. They’ll have equipment demonstrations, fingerprinting for the kids, and free ice cream, hot dogs and soda. Knapp hopes as many as a thousand people come out. The event will be at Riverview Park on Tuesday, August 2 from 5 to 8 p.m.
