New State Standards Announced For Interpreters

Sign language interpreters in Michigan now have to meet new standards. Vicki Levengood, with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, says those who are deaf or deaf and blind need experts able to interpret complex things for them.

“The state of Michigan believes it’s vital that individuals who are deaf have access to the best interpreting available,” Levengood said. “So, we instituted under law these new standards for interpreters.”

Levengood says the interpretors are needed in courtrooms, doctor’s offices, and hospitals. She says those interpreters need to be credentialed.
