The St. Joseph City Commission has signed off on an amendment for a Harbor Shores planned unit development along the riverfront. At Monday’s meeting, commissioners heard from Andrew VonMaur, a consultant for the development at 800 Whitwam Drive, on the north side of the river. The plan was originally for 138 residential units, and now, they’ve updated it for 78 units of six different types, including cottages and row houses. VonMaur says the somewhat scaled-back development will be better suited to St. Joe.

“This plan really focuses on waterfront access and waterfront views, even for properties that are inland,” VonMaur told WSJM. “The previous plan really prioritized waterfront views for the condominium buildings, but not for most of the other buildings.”

The amended planned unit development also includes more common green space. Commissioners applauded the changes, with Mayor Mike Garey calling them a “home run.” The goal is to break ground on infrastructure for the project this year, and possibly get to construction next year. 40 additional residential units are possible for the neighborhood at a later time, but VonMaur said, for now, developers are aiming to keep the project in line with market conditions.
