The new administrator for the Salvation Army of Benton Harbor is in place and ready to get to work with the community. Major David Womack comes to the area from South Dakota, with previous experience in Detroit, during his 28 years with the Salvation Army. He says he’s settling in and getting an idea of what programs he’d like to implement.

“Right now, we’re just to the point of looking to see what’s next,” Womack told WSJM. “We’re trying to get a group of people together to help us with a strategic plan so that we can take the programs we have and shape them into something a little more meaningful for what the needs are today.”

However, Womack says no existing programs will go away. He says he wants to continue helping men staying at the shelter find independent housing while engaging the community. He also wants to increase the organization’s advisory board to be more diverse. Womack says he’s learned the community needs a lot of help, but has people with the spirit to make that happen.
