AAA of Michigan says there has been an increase in traffic crashes caused by debris in the road. The auto club says national data shows a 40% jump since 2001, and between 2011 and 2014, the increase was especially big, with 200,000 such crashes reported. AAA’s Susan Hiltz says there are multiple reasons.

“Diminishing funds to clean up the road,” Hiltz said. “That’s one instance, and then just more people are moving around more. There’s more construction on the road, so you just have a more likelihood that things are going to fall off on the road.”

Hiltz says about 39,000 injuries and more than 500 deaths occurred between 2011 and 2014 due to road debris. Most of the crashes happen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
