State Senator John Proos is warning southwest Michigan residents not to fall for the latest phone scam. In this case, he says some people have reported getting calls from a Grand Rapids-based Michigan Department of Treasury number. Proos says the number is being spoofed.

“The cloned number out of the Grand Rapids Department of Treasury office is being used to dupe our citizens into giving over information and utilizing pre-paid debit cards as a way to pay the fraudulent debts that they are told they owe the department of treasury,” Proos said.

The caller will tell the would-be victim they must pay up immediately for some back taxes or face arrest. Proos says the Michigan Treasury would not contact a delinquent taxpayer in such a manner. If you get such a call, just hang up.
