The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is again warning drivers about gas pump skimming devices. The skimmers can be attached to a gas pump to steal your credit card information when you pay outside. Department spokesperson Jennifer Holton says about 70 of them have been found in the state.

“What we can say is that we know they are here, and we know that we’re continuing to find them,” Holton told WSJM News. “So, we know that we need to make sure that consumers, as well as gas station owners, remain vigilant as it relates to credit card skimmers.”

Holton says there’s no sure way to spot a skimmer, so your best bet to avoid them is to just pay inside. Some gas stations have increased surveillance on the pumps, and others will put red tape on them following a clear inspection, but even that’s not sure-fire. Holton says you should watch your account statements.
