Southwestern Michigan College is working to help students displaced by the closure of ITT Technical Institute this week. The for-profit chain of schools abruptly shut down, leaving many students with no place to go. SMC’s Mike O’Brian tells WSJM News the college is looking into whether any ITT Tech credits could be transferred to SMC.

“There’s a number of programs that are comparable,” O’Brien said. “We’ve reached out specifically to ITT, and in fact, we have the director of our Niles campus heading to the South Bend campus to hopefully have some discussions there or get a little more information about what the students may need.”

O’Brien says SMC is reaching out to the hundreds of regional ITT Tech students who are out luck to see if they can get enrolled in its similar programs. Some of them could get into mid-semester course sections at SMC starting in October, or possibly earlier. SMC is holding an open house next Wednesday between 5 and 7 p.m. at its Niles campus ITT Tech students to discuss their options. You can find out more at SWMich.edu/ITT.
