The Michigan Board of Education has issued new guidelines to districts on how to treat LGBT students. The guidelines are voluntary, but have spurred criticism from conservative lawmakers, especially over restroom and bathroom policies for transgender students. State Representative Jon Hoadley says the policy is needed because LGBT students are more likely to face bullying.

“We’ve recently seen that Michigan is one of the worst states for bullying, and we see that across all of our students,” Hoadley said. “So, it’s important that we’re taking every step we can.”

Hoadley helped write a letter endorsing the effort which was signed by all the Democratic members of the House. Opponents either objected to transgender students being allowed to use the restroom of their choice, or on religious grounds.
