An Illinois man has embarked on a quest to row across Lake Michigan to raise money for the fight against childhood cancer. Jacob Beckley tried to leave Sunday night, but had to turn around after about a mile due to thick fog. He then relaunched Monday morning. State Senator John Proos was on hand for the departure, telling WSJM News he’s a big supporter of Beckley’s cause.

“The precursor to all cancers are these childhood cancers,” Proos said. “We already know that from a scientific perspective, and September was Childhood Cancer Awareness month.”

Proos tells us Beckley is being followed by a boat with his wife on board. They knew it was time to turn around Sunday night when the chase boat could no longer see Beckley’s rowboat. You can track Beckley’s progress at this link. You can also donate to his cause at GoFundMe.com/Row4ACure. All of the money Beckley raises will go to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
