U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. has plans to visit Michigan on Friday to discuss the importance of exposing students to manufacturing careers and to highlight school-based health programs. The Detroit Free Press  reports his first stop in Warren will include a discussion with student apprentices at manufacturing
company Proper Tooling’s plastic-injection molding facility. The visit will coincide with Manufacturing Day, an annual celebration of modern manufacturing. King is then scheduled to host a conversation about school-based health services at Northwestern High School in Flint. King first Michigan visit doesn’t include a stop in Detroit. But King says he’s monitoring the city’s school system and remains concerned about low academic performance, an increase in poor-performing charter schools and potential school closures without clear plans for quality alternatives for students.
