The Michigan Deer Crash Coalition is urging drivers to be on the lookout for deer after a particularly deadly 2015. From now until the end of the year, deer are on the run, making it dangerous no matter where you are in the state.

“They think of deer up north or in the U.P., but actually the majority of crashes occur in southern lower Michigan, in counties where there has been a lot of development,” says coalition chair Lori Conarton. Kent and Oakland counties have the highest numbers of crashes. There were just over 47,000 crashes involving deer in the state last year, with 11 people being killed and over 1,100 hurt. Conarton says five of the deaths happened to people on motorcycles. Crashes involving deer were up 3% in 2015 from 2014.
