Today is the Michigan deadline to register if you want to vote in the November election. U.S. Senator Gary Peters says this year’s presidential race has gotten more attention because of the two candidates.

“We’ve got a very big election this year, very clear contrats between two candidates for President. So, it’s important for people to have their voice heard.”

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says it’s important to know the system can’t be tampered with by another country or by hackers.

“The thing people think is that our voting machines are connected to the Internet. They’re not,” says Johnson. “It goes from the 1,603 local clerks, and they have them on paper, too, and the county sends the data to the state.”

Johnson says absentee ballots are up 58% this year, but turnout for the general election is expected to be just over 60%. Senator Peters says it is important for people to realize that politics do matter and voting makes a difference for the future of our communities. If you want to beat the deadline the registration form needs to be handed into a Secretary of State office or city/township clerk by the end of today or mailed and postmarked by the end of the day.
