We won’t have any statewide ballot proposals before us on November 8, but Lake Michigan College is urging people to go all the way through the ballot and vote on its millage request. Security upgrades will be paid for by the funding if the millage is approved, but also interim president Dr. Bob Harrison says they will be working on updates in the classroom and to the curriculum. He says the job situation in the area is similar to the late 1990s right now – employers can’t find people with the right skills for the work available.

“What we’re trying to do is position the college for those jobs that exist not only today, but those coming in the future,” Harrison told WSJM’s Pat Moody. “So, new tech-type jobs, things that will require a little different skill set than what’s been required in the past.”

The millage will also pay for infrastructure improvements. “Just making the heating and cooling system changes at the Napier building will save us about $300,000 a year in energy costs.” Harrison says there are “fundamental” things that need to be done on all campuses.
