It’s an unofficial holiday for thousands of Michiganders as firearm deer hunting season opens today. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources expects over 525,000 hunters will take part in the deer season, which runs through November 30.

“It accounts for a huge part of Michigan’s economy,” says DNR deer program biologist Ashley Autenrieth. “It’s actually the biggest part of our hunting economy. Over 90% of Michigan hunters actually pursue deer.”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates hunting in Michigan has more than a $2.3 billion impact on the economy.
