South Haven Area Emergency Services is gearing up for another Citizen Fire Academy. The department’s Owen Ridley tells our newsroom it’s a chance for anyone to learn a thing or two about what it’s like to be a firefighter.

“You’ll experience some extrication using some of our tools that we use, removing door, roofs, windows of vehicles,” Ridley said. “They’ll actually perform a safety inspection on their home.”

Also, the class will culminate with putting out a simulated house fire. This is the second time South Haven Area Emergency Services has held an academy. Ridley recommends anyone who signs up to get the OK from their doctor first, as some parts of the academy will be tough. Openings are limited, so it’s better to sign up early. Classes start in March and you can register by calling the department at 637-1813. You can learn more at SHAES.org.
