2016 was a successful year for the Grand Rapids-based Bissell Pet Foundation. Spokesperson Holly Kroeze tells WSJM News they managed to find homes for thousands of dogs and cats with their Empty the Shelter adoption events statewide.

“For the entire year of 2016, we held three different events, and almost 3,000 pets found homes throughout the three events,” Krueze said. “So, it was a huge success, and we’re really excited about what we can do in 2017.”

The most recent Empty the Shelter event was in October, and that one resulted more than 1,900 animal adoptions. The Bissell Pet Foundation worked with 57 shelters statewide, including the Van Buren County Animal Control Shelter, paying the costs of the adoptions for people willing to take critters into their homes. Kroeze says more than 90% of the animals that were adopted remain in those homes. Bissell is currently planning the next Empty the Shelter event. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we find out the date and locations.
