Bill Prevents Cities From Implementing Sanctuary Status

A Michigan House committee has approved a plan banning local governments from declaring themselves sanctuary cities. State Representative Beau LaFave, of Iron Mountain, tells us it also prohibits governments from penalizing police and others who call Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“If a police officer wants to check the status, or call in an illegal immigrant who is violating federal law, he shouldn’t be punished,” LaFave said.

The plan asks the public to report their local government for violations of the law. Opponents say the bill will encourage profiling and make some people afraid to call for emergency assistance.
