Two of South Haven’s Medal of Honor recipients are now acquainted with each other. Vietnam War veteran Jim McCloughan, who received the honor last week from President Trump, met on Sunday at the American Legion Post 49 with Korean War veteran Duane Dewey. The 85-year-old Dewey was the first to be given the Medal of Honor by President Eisenhower in 1953, while McCloughan was the first to be given the medal from President Trump. South Haven’s first Medal of Honor recipient was William Wilcox, who earned the distinction in the Civil War. He was given the medal in 1896 by President McKinley for his actions in 1864, and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven. The Rotary Club of South Haven’s Tom Renner tells WSJM News that for a city the size of South Haven, having three Medal of Honor recipients in its history is “significant.”
