Congressman Fred Upton is pushing for more money for states next year to treat mental illness. He tells WSJM News he and some colleagues this week sent a letter to the House Appropriations Committee asking for money set aside in the 21st Century Cures legislation to be set aside again next year.

“We included a billion dollars for mental health assistance for the states,” Upton said. “We need to do that again, and in the omnibus appropriations bill that could be up on the House floor this week, we hope there is more mental health money.”

Upton says the money would go to counties for mental health, whether it be to identify and treat mental illness early, or to fight opioid abuse. Upton’s hoping for that money in the omnibus bill and thinks it may be possible with some bipartisan support.
