The Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education has accepted the resignation of Superintendent Shelly Walker. The vote was unanimous at a Thursday night special meeting.

“The board of education accepts Dr. Shelly Walker’s resignation effective April 10, 2018,” Trustee Lisa Gulley read from a resolution.

Dr. Walker had been on leave since February when the board took her off duty for an investigation. Board President Marletta Seats read a statement following Thursday’s vote saying the board wants to find new district leadership and Walker wants to pursue other opportunities.

“In order to resolve all pending disputes with Dr. Walker and avoid potentially costly and lengthy litigation which would distract from the district’s current progress, the district has agreed to accept Dr. Walker’s resignation,” Seats said.

The vote to part ways with Dr. Walker came after a nearly two hour closed session. The resolution also stated the board approves a separation agreement and release with Dr. Walker. Trustees took no questions following the meeting.
