WSJM Sports Director Phil McDonald celebrated his 30th anniversary with Mid-West Family Broadcasting this week. As congratulations came in for WSJM’s hardest-working sports guy, state Representative Kim LaSata stopped by Phil’s morning show Friday to present him with a special tribute coming out the state House.

“It is signed by Senator John Proos, myself, Congressman Fred Upton, and Governor Rick Snyder,” LaSata said.

LaSata thanked Phil for all of his hard work on behalf of southwest Michigan schools and athletes. Phil broadcasts countless local sporting events each year, telling us over the years that’s given him the chance to interview Tiger Woods, hang out with Sparky Anderson, and call the recent Benton Harbor Tigers basketball championship game. So, why does Phil do it?

“What it means to the individuals in the community,” Phil said. “The student athletes and the high schools and Lake Michigan College, the parents and all of their families. The recognition we’re able to give them through the radio station is why I keep doing it.”

Phil was saluted this week by a long list of dignitaries for his 30 years with WSJM. He tells us he started out as a part-time board operator back when WSJM wasn’t even doing sports.
