Van Buren County officials say it will be next Tuesday before they will be ready to formally charge the first of the approximately 50 people arrested in Sunday night’s violence on North Beach in South Haven. City officials and police say they plan to take a few months or longer to decide what they will do next year to improve security, or reduce the risk of another outbreak of violence like the one that occurred this year. Ian Kozic witnessed the melee.

“Lot of people running. I saw bottles flying around, and someone got hit in the head with a cooler,” Kozic says. He adds it got ugly quickly. “I saw quite a few people getting arrested. It was like a straight-up riot.”

Mayor Bob Burr told WSJM News earlier this week it’s too early to say for certain if the “Light up the Lake” fireworks show would be canceled next year. More discussions are still needed.
