If you’re feeling lucky, Friday would be an especially good day to buy a lotto ticket. The jackpot for the Mega Millions game is now $540 million. Once it gets that high, the ticket sales typically jump, so the jackpot could go even higher. The Michigan Lottery’s Jeff Holyfield says he’s met big-time lotto winners, and there’s a common feeling among them.
“When we start dealing with the players with the really big amounts,the really big prizes, the phrases were hear over and over are, ‘I can’t believe it, I don’t know what I’m going to do, I’m not sure of where to start,’ and all of that,” Holyfield told WSJM.
Not to fear. Holyfield says if you’re the big winner, you have a year to come forward, so there’s plenty of time to consult a financial planner and an attorney. The odds of winning the top prize are one in more than 258 million. The lump sum payment — $380 million before taxes.
