Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says he’s reflecting on courtroom protocols after two bailiffs were shot dead at the Berrien County Courthouse on Monday. He says the county’s use of video for court appearances makes officers safer because it doesn’t subject them to vulnerabilities outside of the controlled atmosphere of jail.

“The system we have in place is one that I am much more comfortable with than we had in the past,” Fuller said. “We’re probably going to change some part of it right now, and you’re going to fine probably 83 sheriffs in the state of Michigan reviewing their processes.”

However, Fuller also says the system is too expensive for some of the state’s counties. Accused Kalamazoo mass-shooter Jason Dalton and Charles Pickett, the man accused of running down nine bicyclists in Cooper Township, made their initial court appearances using the equipment from the county lock-up.
