A service for slain Berrien County Courthouse security chief Joseph Zangaro has been held. The service to remember his life drew thousands to Lake Michigan College’s Mendel Center in Benton Township Friday afternoon. A 21-gun salute was held in Zangaro’s honor, a bugler played taps, blue ribbons were seen all over the property, and police agencies from across southwest Michigan were represented. Hundreds of officers were in attendance. Zangaro was shot and killed Monday by a Berrien County Jail inmate who was trying to escape. Also killed was jail security officer Ronald Kienzle. Kienzle’s service will also be at the Mendel Center on Monday at 1 p.m. Visitation will be Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel in St. Joseph.
