The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning is among several agencies around the state reminding drivers of what they’re supposed to do when an emergency vehicle comes by with its lights flashing. The office’s Ann Readett says Michigan’s Emergency Vehicle Caution Law is clear.

“Drivers need to move over into an open lane,” Readett told WSJM. “If that’s not possible, they need to slow down and pass with caution.”

Readett says if you can’t pull over, you must give the vehicle as much room as possible. She notes a driver found responsible for violating the move over law is guilty of a misdemeanor and is subject to four points on their license. The rule applies to ambulances, fire and police vehicles, and tow trucks.
