The 131st Michigan State Police Trooper Training Academy is underway in Lansing. For the first time in 99 years, there are now three going on at the same time, as the state police works to increase its numbers. MSP Sergeant Kandyce Herr says the 50 recruits now taking part have a tough 23 weeks ahead of them.

“The will have physical training, they will have first aid, legal classes, report writing, firearms, defensive tactics, driving,” Herr told WSJM. “Everything they need to know.”

The recruits’ day runs from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Herr says the individuals who sign up do have to go through a lengthy approval process before being allowed in. They come from military, law enforcement, and a variety of other backgrounds. The 131st academy has one recruit from southwest Michigan, Tyler LaVanway, of Coloma.
