The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the deaths of an elderly woman and her dog in Berrien Springs. Extremely high levels of carbon monoxide were found in the home in the 4900 block of Appian Way yesterday afternoon. Authorities are eyeing the gas as the cause of the deaths, but the investigation is still ongoing. A haz-mat team was called out for a gas leak, and the carbon monoxide levels were tested about four hours after the gas was shut off. Our partners at WNDU NewsCenter 16 report Sheriff’s Department Captain Rockey Adams says when the levels were tested, the reading was around 1,000 parts per million, with 12-hundred considered a fatal amount. The fire department detected cyanide gas upon arrival. An autopsy will be performed to determine what killed the woman.
