The blueberry crop in southwest Michigan is looking strong this year. Mark Longstroth, with MSU Extension, says that comes after a couple of low-yield years.
“2013, we did 114 to 117 million pounds, and then the next year, we hit 96, and last year we did 73 million pounds, which is quite a bit lower,” Longstroth said. “Our average is usually between 90 and 100 [million] pounds,” Longstroth told WSJM.
Longstroth says the region is on track for about 101 million pounds this year, although it’s possible it could break the record of 117 million. He notes most growers are happy with the crop, although some have concerns about the low amount of rain this summer. Longstroth adds peaches, grapes, and apples also look good this year.
