A group of Berrien County residents is hoping to help police in the area following last month’s fatal shootings at the Berrien County Courthouse. Berrien County Strong — Community in Action was formed on Facebook by Gretta Volkenstein soon after the July 11 incident. On Thursday, members met to talk fundraising, among other things. Volkenstein says they’ll start by raising money for the Berrien Community Foundation’s sheriff’s department challenge grant.

“We want our officers to have the security and comfort of knowing that they each have a vest in case they get into an active shooting situation and are protected,” Volkenstein told WSJM.

The community foundation is chipping in $1 for every $2 the public donates to buy the sheriff’s department better vest and holsters. You can find out more at BerrienCommunity.org/Sheriff. Meanwhile, Berrien County Strong — Community in Action plans to move on to backing other police efforts in the future.
