State Senator John Proos has introduced legislation that would let hunters and anglers show their proof of a license using their smartphones. Proos says someone whose enjoying the outdoors should be able to show they’re doing so legally without having to carry around paper proof. He notes southwest Michigan is home to tens of thousands of hunters and fishermen.

“That is a part of the contribution of nearly $2 billion that southwest Michigan is a part of,” Proos said. “That impact is significant, and one that I think puts us in a position to utilize today’s technologies.”

Proos’ bill would require the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to provide smartphone applications that display base hunting and all-species fishing licenses for customers by March 1, 2018. It would also require the DNR to provide information on hunting areas digitally. Proos is confident the plan will pass.
