Legislation from state Representative Al Pscholka granting limited exemption from prosecution to people of any age reporting a possible drug overdose to police or medical authorities is now headed to Governor Rick Snyder. The state House gave final approval to the Good Samaritan plan Tuesday. It’s an expansion of a previous plan from Pscholka protecting people underage. Pscholka says he’s proud of it.

“I look at things that I’ve done in the legislature over the last five or six year, I would say this is the most important thing that I’ve done,” Pscholka said.

Pscholka’s original legislation was inspired by the overdose death of 16-year-old Mason Mizwicki, of Watervliet. He overdosed and no one reported it. Drug overdose deaths in Michigan increased by 14% to more than 1,700 in 2014.
