Coming up next Saturday will be a chance for everyone to help test the quality of the water in the Paw Paw River in Van Buren County. A.J. Brucks, with the Van Buren Conservation District, tells WSJM News volunteers will take to the river in Lawrence to collect bugs. What kinds of insects they can be a hint about whether the water is polluted.

“If we are finding species like dragon flies, it means that the water quality is of a good standard because they are very sensitive to pollution,” Brucks said. “If it’s a polluted water body, we’ll find more things like scuds and leeches.”

Brucks says the bug collection days are always a lot of fun. The data is used to determine what areas might need some environmental cleanup. Anyone who wants to help is asked to call the conservation district at 657-4030, extension 5.
