The Michigan Department of Transportation is preparing to begin a major bridge project in South Haven. Spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News crews will be out on Monday working on the Blue Star Highway Bridge over the Black River.

“We’re going to be replacing the superstructure of the bridge,” Schirripa said. “So, the beams, the deck, the railing, everything above the bridge pilings and abutment. That’ll all get replaced.”

MDOT crews will also be working below the bridge to re-enforce the riverbed to protect the bridge into the future. The construction will mean the bridge’s closure, and Schirripa tells us details about the detour are still being worked out. Work on the $3.3 million project begins Monday and will run through late June.
