A major construction project is about to get underway on a bridge in South Haven, and it could affect your commute well into next year. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us they’re replacing the bridge beams and deck on Blue Star Highway over the Black River. They’re also doing some work under the bridge.

“Under the bridge, we’re using large rocks, “Schirripa said. “We’re armoring the riverbed. That will help protect the river from eroding away underneath the bridge pilings and by the abutments.”

Schirripa says this project is unusual in that crews will be working on it through the winter. The $3.3 million project starts Monday and will run through the end of June. The bridge will be closed and a detour posted.
