Schools all around Michigan will be counting their students on Wednesday to determine how much state aid they’ll receive in the next year. It’s the fall student Count Day, and Lakeshore Schools Superintendent Phillip Freeman tells WSJM New it’s the most important count of the year.

“90% of our count, when it comes to our full-time equivalents, our number of students, is the fall count,” Freeman said. “So, that’s 90% of our count, and then we take 10% of last spring’s account. For us, they call that a blended count.”

School districts everywhere in Michigan ask parents to be sure their kids are present for the day. It’s especially crucial for the districts with deficits and declining enrollments. At Lakeshore, they’re expecting enrollment to be stable for the year.
