This is School Bus Safety Week, and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is reminding all drivers of the need to pay attention in school zones and around school buses. Deputy Kelly Laesch tells WSJM News distractions are the biggest problem on the road.

“Parents worry about everything else under the sun,” Laesch told WSJM. “You got to get dinner ready, you’ve got things going on at work, you’ve got to get the kids to school you’ve got projects due. So, you just have so much stuff going on that they need to just stop. When you’re driving, you’re driving.”

It’s not just the adults, though. Lesch tells us teen drivers also need to be taught about the importance of avoiding distractions, adding the kids who ride the buses, too, should be more careful. The sheriff’s department reminds everyone to obey the bus lights, keep their distance, and never pass a school bus.
