A report from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy this week concluded there’s no evidence that the Pure Michigan tourism campaign is worth the money, but if you ask local tourism leaders, they’ll tell you otherwise. Millicent Huminsky, with the Southwest Michigan Tourist Council, tells WSJM News the boom that the industry has seen recent years is partly due to the ad campaign.

“We’re not building more hotels because tourism isn’t increasing in the area, and it has a large part to do with the Pure Michigan campaign because they can reach areas way beyond what our budget can reach,” Huminsky said.

Huminsky says Pure Michigan has brought tens of millions of dollars to southwest Michigan alone. She points out the Mackinac Center is usually critical of programs funded in the state budget.
