There may have just been a big election, but that’s no reason for Congress to step away from its responsibilities. That’s the belief of Congressman Fred Upton, who tells WSJM News one of the big things to be done in the lame duck session is the final approval of his 21st Century Cures legislation. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that will happen.

“He intends to bring this bill up on the Senate floor and he thought, in his words, ‘it will be the most significant piece of legislation enacted in this Congress,” Upton said. “We want to keep that true to his word.”

Upton says the House will add more funding for the National Cancer Institute as part of a “cancer cure moonshot.” The plan also includes a sped up process for approving new drugs and medical devices, as well as more funding for the National Institutes of Health. The plan could pass by year’s end.
