A new partnership called Trading Places will help Michigan inmates reintegrate into society. Heidi Washington, Director of the Michigan Department of Corrections, told Michigan News Network they’re working with two organizations to train prisoners.

“The work that they do in the building trades and the skilled trades area will then translate into pre-apprenticeship credits with the laborers union, and when they come out of prison, they’ll be able to transfer those hours through a certification process,” Washington said.

Trading Places is one of many programs the corrections department is using to try to reduce repeat offenders who wind up back in prison. The goal is to reduce crime, cut costs, and keep communities safer.
