This is the last week property owners behind on their 2014 taxes will have to pay up. Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski tells us 5 p.m. Friday is the deadline to get that money in or sign up for a payment plan. Don’t think you can put it off.
“What’s sad is that around the first week of April or second week of April, people remember that they should have paid it, and by then, it’s too late to pay us and it’s too late to get in front of a judge to ask for an extension or an exemption,” Witkowski said.
Witkowski says anyone who hasn’t paid for 2014 or gotten into a payment plan by the end of the week will no longer own the property in question. That includes the Orchards Mall, which still hasn’t paid the roughly $140,000 it owes for 2014. Witkowski says his office will not grant the mall’s owners a payment plan, and if that money isn’t in by the deadline, the mall will be foreclosed.
