As you drive along the freeways in Michigan, have you noticed all of the trash? Well, volunteers will begin picking up the trash along many freeways in southern lower Michigan this weekend.

“We have nearly 3,000 groups, not volunteers, but groups of volunteers across the state who’ve adopted two-mile stretches of highway and committed to keeping them clean at the three pickups we do each year,” says Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Weingarten. He says volunteers pick up between 65,000 and 70,000 bags of trash every year, saving the state around $5 million. This first cleanup will run through April 23rd. MDOT is asking drivers to keep an eye out for these volunteers and drive cautiously.
