An initiative to make recreational marijuana legal in Michigan has been launched. Former state Representative Jeff Irwin, now with the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, tells Michigan News Network the prohibition on marijuana has worked about as well as the prohibition on alcohol once did.

“We have 20,000 people every year who are arrested in Michigan, and this would end that,” Irwin said. “We can very easily imagine how, for those 20,000 people, that’s an improvement. They’re not going to get arrested. They’re not going to have to run you through court.”

If approved, there would be a 10% retail based tax on marijuana. Medical marijuana would continue to be legal in Michigan. Supporters of marijuana legalization hope to get the issue on the November of 2018 ballot. They’re circulating petitions now.
