The Ransomware cyber attack affecting thousands of computers has not spread as much as feared with the start of a new work week. Europol says the global attack impacted 200,000 organizations in 150 countries last Friday, but on Monday, there were no new major outbreaks. Bill Kowalski, cyber security expert with Rehmann Group in Troy, spoke with Michigan News Network about how you can avoid getting hit.

“Anybody that clicks on a link that they’re not familiar with or that they’re not entirely sure about allows this often to get into their systems,” Kowalski said. “This is a small amount. They’re asking for $300, but they could be asking for more, and if you’re not backing up your data, you more likely to have to pay the $300 to get the encryption key.”

Kowalski tells us the bad guys are stepping up their game. He says your home computer shouldn’t be affected because the attackers targeted bigger organizations and businesses.
