Proposal Would Establish A One Chamber State Legislature

Michigan Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley recently proposed to institute a part-time legislature, and now, there’s a new proposal on the table. State Representative Jeff Yaroch has introduced a resolution to eliminate the separate state House and Senate to create a one chamber legislature. He spoke with Michigan News Network about the idea.

“If we’re talking about a part time legislature, there’s no reason a unicameral legislature,” Yaroch said. “It’s not about eliminating the Senate. It’s about having one chamber. It wouldn’t be the House or the Senate. It would be the Legislature.”

The Macomb County Republican predicts the move would save tax payers about $50 million each year. The joint resolution has been sent to the House Committee on Government Operations for review.
