Nearly 1.5 million Michiganders will travel at least 50 miles this Fourth of July. AAA spokesperson Susan Hiltz tells WKZO News that’s an increase of about 3.5%. She thinks more folks are traveling for a variety of reasons.

“Gas prices are low, employment is strong across the state,” Hiltz said. “We’ve got rising incomes, and we’ve got higher consumer confidence.”

Hiltz tells us the state hasn’t had so many Independence Day travelers since 2002. Most folks who plan to travel will do so by car. That’s about 1.3 million of them. So, Hiltz reminds everyone to put down their phones when behind the wheel and buckle up.
