The Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee has unanimously approved legislation from state Senator John Proos to let some low-level juvenile offenders get their records cleared. Proos tells WSJM News they would have to complete the 17.5 month Youth ChalleNGe Program run by the National Guard.
“The Youth Challenge Academy itself is an intensive program, for dropouts or potential dropouts that are 16 to 18 years old,” Proos said. “It allows then to earn high school degrees and college credits. It gives a great deal of residential directr enforcement and direct participation in the classroom.”
Proos tells us the National Guard runs Youth ChalleNGe camps in several locations around the country. He notes many of the states with these camps already allow non-violent juvenile offenders to get their records cleared if they complete the program. The bill from Proos to add Michigan to that list now goes on to the full Senate.
