More than 700 volunteers have helped to prepare seniors in Berrien and Cass counties for the winter thanks to the United Way of Southwest Michigan’s annual Rake a Difference Day of Action for Seniors. It happened Thursday. The United Way’s Julee Laurent tells WSJM News the groups raked leaves and cleaned out gutters. That helps seniors stay in their homes for the winter.

“If ice froze in the gutter and tore it off the side, that’s an expense that somebody on a fixed income really can’t take on,” Laurent said. “So this work, it helps in a much bigger, broader scope than I think many people see than when they’re out there in the immediate moment.”

The United Way has held this Day of Action for seven years now. Laurent says 225 seniors were served Thursday as part of the effort.
