The office of Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says he has issued some recommendations to state lawmakers for how they could strengthen hunting rights. AG spokesperson Andrea Bitely tells WSJM News hunting is something that Schuette views as important to all Michiganders. That’s why he’s making some suggestions. For one thing, Schuette asks lawmakers to remove a ban on using or possessing a loaded hunting weapon in a vehicle. Bitely says that’s so DNR rules on duck hunting in a boat will match the actual state law.

“Right now, state law says you can’t hunt from a boat, but we’re looking at Michigan Department of Natural Resources rules and they say you can if the motor is shut off and you’re not moving in any direction,” Bitely said. “So, we’d like to bring statute and regulations up to date so they match each other.”

Schuette is also asking the legislature to allow easier transport of hunting rifles between buildings by dropping a requirement they be in a case. He’s also asking the legislature to set up a program by which property owners can give hunters permission slips to use their land. Bitely says it’s up to the legislature to move next.
